Luckily, in Manitoba, we do not have a high incidence of fleas in our pets due to our climate. Fleas are a small, blood-sucking parasite that can infect both cats and dogs. They cause extreme pruritus or itching and, in extreme circumstances, severe rashes. Luckily, these are easily treated with medication.
Ear mites are small parasites that will live in your cat and dog’s ears and cause extreme pruritus or itching. They are highly contagious between dogs and cats who live in close contact with each other. They are microscopic in size but can often yield a large amount of dark-coloured ear wax visible to owners. They are easily diagnosed and treated with medication. If you think your cat or dog has ear mites, please let our veterinarian know.
