The age your dog hits senior status can vary depending on breed, age, size and other factors. Old age is not a disease. Please discuss any notable changes in your dog’s behaviour with your veterinarian to determine a wellness program to make your dog’s senior years more comfortable.

When is a dog considered a senior pet?

We typically refer to large dog breeds as “senior” at around 7 or 8 years of age and smaller dog breeds at about 11-12 years of age.

How should I care for my senior dog (example: schedule regular check-ups, exercise, special diet, etc.)?

Senior dogs should have at least one overall health exam annually, which may also include a geriatric blood screen to help pick up any underlying illnesses or diseases in their early stages. You can work together with your veterinarian to come up with an appropriate program to best manage your senior pet’s health.
